Reading this makes me wonder if the deficiency of melatonin is being caused by insufficiencies of one or more of the 30 vitamins and minerals that Bruce Nathan Ames had researched in their relation to chronic disease?

I went through a spell over a few months where I was having horrible heartburn regularly with increasing frequency. That sort that just makes you want to die. There was also gas and bloating of the stomach involved. At one point it was so bad the muscles over my stomach seemed to rip or bruise and i could hardly breathe or move for a week or two until they healed.

What ultimately resolved the issue as soon as I began, and it has never returned, was I took an expensive fermented liquid enzyme from ZenCleanse.

For me I would never try melatonin. It makes me hallucinate at night even at a low dose. I don't know what it would do during the day. I hallucinate anyway at night on my own melatonin ostensibly, but adding more makes it guaranteed. I did have a very cute hallucination once where my boyfriend dumped a bucket of hearts on me like neon floating outlines, just like this emoji but more🥰.

After reading your brief tutorial of the anatomy and physiology involved in digestion—as pertains to the diaphragm in particular—it reminded me of something so beneficial that every human being can, and should, do it every day . . . sing. Improves diaphragmatic tone & function, breathing, core stability and, certainly one of the most important things, nervous system and mood improvement. I have a Bachelor of Music (Vocal Performance) degree, and after reading that post, I felt quite chastened because it reminded me that as I’ve gotten older, even I don’t do enough. Doesn’t matter whether one can carry a tune or not. Be it Bob Dylan or Beethoven, sing! Good for the body and the soul.

It is my understanding that long-term fluoride ingestion causes pineal atrophy, so older people simply cannot make melatonin.

Can we just use some common sense?

Stop interfering with the digestion process by drinking with your meal.

Digestion begins in the mouth with chewing so that pepsin signals how much acid is needed tigest whats going down. You think 3 bites of yogurt and acid starts squirting to digest it? No. When you chew that ribeye and potato salad, the saliva tells your stomach exacgly how much acid is needed. If you glug glug glug a 32oz BigGulp, you just diluted everything. After more food and more liquid, that acid is floating on a wave of undigested food and useless liquid. And it burns tender esophogeal tissue.

Just remember they trained us to eat this way. We are the new guys on the block. In scores of east and central asian countries what do you get with food? A tiny cup of chai. For sipping to clear your palate.(Chai means "tea" . Onlyhin usa is it a specific milky spicey thing.) In any European countries what might you get with a meal? A short glass of wine. To sip for clearing your palate. You have to ASK for water, which they bring to the dumb Americans, smiling indulgently. Their civilizations have been around for a long time, and they know how to eat. We, on the other hand, were trained early 1930s by the wealthy corporations: "heres your hotdog and heres your soda" whilst they made millions on floorsweep grain and extruded meat "products" that formerly were disposed of at great costs.commercials on tv taught us to eat with drinks in hand as McDonalds bundled them together for happy meals. And so then our mothers... "here's your dinner, here's your drink" until we habitually failed to digest our food for receiving it's nutrients.

I only have some 4-500 men as my study group, as a 16yr Independent Contractor instructor for State of Alaska Railroad, in many Health&Safety topics. They work in frigid conditions doing some of the toughest work in the world, with few roads and so NO stores or even little quik-gyps for over-the-counter Tums. Once when I explained digestion(chew well! No chuggalugging liquid! No seed oils fast food!) then started asking them to just try it---it didnt take long for the discomforts and bloated bellies to subside. Of course, a side benefit was they thought I was genius, haaaah!

Excellent article- I'm frustrated by how simplistic it's explained by folk as being due to hiatus hernia. Acid suppression is of course a Bandaid fix without addressing causes such as oesophageal or gastric clearing (motility). I find many cases of PPI refractory reflux due to gastric motility disorders, mostly gastro paresis as evidenced by by epigastric bloating and flatulence or duodenogastric reflux of bile and then bile GORD (which I think is the major cause of Barrett's).

Might it be worth a diagnostic trial of melatonin supplement in refractory GORD and if successful addressing the light issues you mentioned?

Heartburn is simply to explain.

It’s caused by low SALT.

Stomach acid requires HCl.

NaCl is where the Cl comes from.

This is why salt sat on the table and was shaken liberally on foods eaten, before the salt propaganda.

Low stomach acid means the food is not fully digested in the stomach so instead food ferments. Gases of fermentation rise up and open the stomach valves, taking stomach acid upwards.

Fix GERD with SALT.

Peptic ulcers were vastly more prevalent in days when high salt diets were usual which goes against your theory ....

Peptic ulcers are caused by bacterial growth. I imagine dryness or dehydration, insufficient salt and water led to this occurrence. Dehydration is our Achilles heel.

Presumably that's due to additives to table salt? I remember one brand using its running properties in marketing- must have been chockers with anti-caking agents

There's those things as well.

But, I meant in that the benefits of salt come from its natural complex minerals.

Table salt is almost always just sodium chloride based.

I’d say table salt even the ubiquitous plain ones, are better than no salt.

Plain salt, was on every table setting when I was a child. The increase of all chronic dis-ease has grown since its removal via salt propaganda directives.

Find one area of the body that does not rely upon moisture? Salt retains moisture.

Of course it’s better to have a naturally rich mineral salt, without anti-caking additives. I buy ancient lakes, enriched magnesium salt to add to my water. But I would take a plain salt if there was nothing else available.

Hyponatremia symptoms are

Nausea, anorexia, vomiting.

This points to salt’s pivotal role in digestion. Then think about the bile salts and the need to claim water from the large bowel to properly form a stool.

Salt and water rule the digestive system.

Woahhhhh.

So supplementing melatonin you'd say is in the "solution to a problem" zone, not so much the "take it every day, no drawbacks" zone?

This include diet sources like animal tissue or my recent habit of tart cherry juice before bed?

I think the physiologic and scientific evidence is clear that chronically supplementing something that your body makes naturally is not a good idea.

Most people's lifestyle prevent the formation of melatonin, thus there's no reason to think it cannot be reversed with some diligence. Which would ultimately exclude the need to supplement melatonin.

Both me and my son had acid reflux. It might have been caused by stress or bad eating habits or both. It went for years, I couldn't sleep laying flat, my boy constantly coughed because of it. We tried drugs, herbal teas, different diets, not eating before sleep. Made no difference. The one thing that did help was a cup of water with a tablespoon of natural apple cider vinegar before meals. So simple and cheap and easy to do, I couldn't believe it. And yet, it solved the problem.

Vitamin D supplementation doesn't work in the same way as sunlight.

I prefer sunlight. I don't recommend vitamin D supplements.

I don't like vitamin D supplements either. I got my vitamin D level from 24.4 to 69.2 using fermented cod liver oil only, not vitamin D supplement.

What other substances which we make should not be supplemented if possible? (That sre supplemented commonly enough)

For example, hormones (including thyroid hormone and progesterone. And trt)? Any vitamins?
