I’m thrilled to read this about melatonin. My wife has GERD and has been prescribed pantoprazole, omeprozole and famotidine. Her GI wants her to be on PPIs permanently, but we pushed back. How does someone digest food without stomach acid? I’ve read that even after coming off PPIs, stomach acid production is limited. Since she is not taking any medication now, I think melatonin would be a good option.

This is fascinating. I had a friend recently passed away from esophageal cancer, due mainly from a hiatial hernia and resulting reflux.

I find large doses of melatonin don't cause as much grogginess as the small doses.

Thanks for your work!

I in my ignorance had accepted a prescription for Omeprazole (PPI) and I was on it for years. I developed an arrhythmia and severe muscle weakness particularly in my legs, I was also unable to exercise. I read an article which revealed the many side effects of this dreadful medication I decided to try and stop it, what a journey! it was over a year of reducing this medication very slowly before I was able to feel relatively normal, it felt like a nightmare trying to come off it. I would strongly advise anyone not to take this medication, I was on it for minor symptoms and I ended with symptoms much more severe when trying to stop it.

What about silent reflux and/or h pylori?

I take 300 micrograms of melatonin daily which helps me sleep better. This is first time I hear about benefits for acid reflux (I don’t suffer from it). I wonder how many other health benefits can be attributed to melatonin. Thank you.
