A follower on Twitter asked if I have any advice for someone trying to enter a healthcare profession. Yes, I do.
The Question
Over the last couple of years, I have asked myself:
If my younger self knew what I know now, would I still become a doctor?
It is a privilege to practice medicine.
There are few things that are as intellectually stimulating, difficult, and rewarding as helping patients understand and overcome the obstacles in the way of optimal health.
But, the question remains. Would I do it again?
No. And, Yes.
No, I wouldn’t become a licensed and regulated physician.
Yes, I would become a doctor in the truest sense.
